We were initially appointed to carry out the remediation of this existing industrial site in Coventry City Centre, in order to facilitate the construction of a new student accommodation block on behalf of Crosslane Student Developments.
In order to remediate the site we installed a petro fix chemical hydrocarbon barrier along the northern boundary and we also placed extensive test boreholes in order to monitor the effectiveness of this barrier. Asbestos was identified and isolated and removed by a licensed contractor. The extensive hydrocarbon contamination was identified, isolated and then excavated and removed to a specialized local treatment hub.
A 2metre turnover of the entire site was undertaken and a re-compaction of these existing materials in layers. Any obstructions within this material were removed and either crushed for reuse or removed off-site.
Extensive Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam were present along the River Sherbourne, which borders the site. All the invasive plants were treated and a root barrier installed along the boundary.
During this remediation element of the works, Cundall’s who prepared the remediation strategy attended site to inspect the works and carry out extensive on-site soils, water testing and groundwater monitoring.
Following the successful completion of the remediation element of works, we were appointed by Create Construction, who were the main contractor for the construction of the student accommodation, to carry out the civils and groundworks elements. This work involved:
- Construction of a 450mm piling mat including requisite geo grids.
- Attendance for the piling contractor and removing materials off site.
- Excavation for pile caps and ground beams including cropping, beam form, bolt cases and concrete.
- Construction of internal and external drainage with attenuation tank and outfall to river Sherburne.
- Construction of all ducting and installation of all incoming services such as gas, water, BT and Virgin.
- Construction of polystyrene void former and internal structural slabs.
- Construction of reinforced structural concrete ground floor slab placement of polystyrene void former.
Given its location in Coventry City Centre, the site was very tight and logistically very challenging. There were a large number of trades working to very tight timescales and this made the external works element extremely challenging. These elements consisted of:
- Construction of reinforced concrete retaining walls to the northern boundary.
- Formation of an external permeable paving solution including a 150mm permeable concrete layer to support scaffolding in accordance of the SUDS design.
- Installation of all associated drainage, aco channels and external works finishing including block paving and cladding.
